Fetal surgery on Spina bifida patient done in Houston

An ultrasound was able to detect that a woman’s child was suffering from Spina bifida before the birth of the child. After researching, the parents found that the best chance of their daughter living a  normal life was fetal surgery.

The procedure was done at Houston’s Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital this past May. In July, the woman gave birth to the 3 pound, 9 ounce child and doctors were able to say that she will be able to walk and  not need a wheelchair.

The entire success of the surgery will not be seen for quite a few years. This surgery was the first Spina bifida surgery inside the womb in Texas.  Spina bifida occurs when there is a hole in the spine and this causes urinary and bowel issues, partial leg paralysis, and fluid in the brain. About 2,000 babies in the U.S. are born with the condition.

Surgery to fix the condition usually occurs within one to three days after birth, but a handful of places now enter while the child is in the womb with the thought that the earlier the treatment begins, the better. Criticism occurred soon after the idea was released and only a clinical trial continued. The outcome of this trial had overwhelming evidence that prenatal surgery had a better possibility of the child living a normal life.
