What is Bipolar disorder?

Bipolar disorder is a mental illness that is described as irritable moods or mania and is characterized by alternating periods of depression and mania. These switches can be very abrupt and the disorder is said to affect men and woman equally.

Symptoms usually begin to be seen between the ages of 15 and 25 and there are two types. Type I has at least one period of full mania that also include periods of major depression. Bipolar type II never really reaches full mania, instead they reach hypomania.

These hypomanic depressions alternate with depressive episodes. In spite of treatment, the cycles usually always continue. Treatment for the disorder includes the use of mood stabilizers,Electroconvulsive therapy, support programs and therapy.

Support is also needed to ensure that the person continues to take the medication until instructed by a doctor to stop.

Recently, the use of Depakote, a drug used to treat bipolar disorder, during pregnancy has been tied to multiple birth defects. If this has happened to you, contact the Depakote lawsuit lawyers of Williams Hart by calling 800-761-3187.
