What is syndactyly?

Syndactyly, commonly known as “webbing,” is a congenital defect in which some of the fingers of hands or feet are abnormally joined together.

After birth, syndactyly is easily detected during a health exam of the baby. The congenital defect affects at least one in every 2,000 births, regardless of sex. In syndactyly, the fingers are joined together by skin or muscles; however, in severe cases, the bones of the fingers are also fused. This finger malformation can be caused by Down syndrome or it can also be inherited. Syndactyly is often treated by undergoing expensive surgery procedure to separate the fingers, depending on the severity.

Sadly, syndactyly birth defect is also linked to pregnant mothers’ use of Depakote to treat various mental conditions. If your loved one has experienced this, enlisting an efficient lawyer could be critical to winning the funds you need to pay for expensive medical treatment.
