Experts: aortic stenosis should be treated immediately

Researchers from Northwestern University, Feinberg School of Medicine are suggesting that individuals who have severe symptomatic aortic stenosis (AS) should immediately undergo surgery to have their valve replaced, Mass Device reported on September 26.

This is the first time researchers have studied the impact of waiting time on prognosis with aortic stenosis. According to Doctor Chris Malaisrie, delaying treatment will result to unnecessary risks. He suggests that patients should undergo aortic valve replacement (AVR) within 30 days after diagnosis; this is because the mortality rate is 3.7 percent within 30 days of diagnosis, and increases to 11.6 percent if left untreated for six months.

Unfortunately, aortic stenosis can present in babies who were exposed to the anti-seizure drug Depakote in the womb. In this difficult situation, getting a lawyer’s help is important especially because this condition often requires costly treatments.
