Texas hospital successfully treated spina bifida in-utero

Surgeons from Texas Children’s hospital and Baylor College of Medicine successfully repaired a spina bifida defect before the infant was born, Becker’s Orthopedic and Spine reported on September 5.

Texas Children’s Hospital Fetal Center reportedly is one of the few hospitals capable of fetal surgery performed in-utero to treat spina bifida. According to reports, the less intrusive procedure is done through two separate very small incisions in the uterus where surgeons will repair the congenital defect. A clinical trial revealed that compared to surgery following birth, repairing the defects inside the womb resulted in reduced rates of hydrocephalus and the need for cerebrospinal fluid shunts.

Parents of babies with spina bifida often suffer great financial loss due to the expensive cost of surgery and treatment. If the congenital defect may have resulted from a pregnant mother ingesting Depakote, a lawyer could be crucial in the pursuit of treatment funds from drug manufacturers.
