Researchers study congenital heart disease therapies for adults

A group of researchers in Kentucky are utilizing Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) to study potential treatments for congenital heart disease in those who had heart surgery as an infant, Medical Xpress reported on August 14.

Those who underwent surgery as an infant for Tetralogy of Fallot, a common congenital heart disease, have a higher risk of dying 25 years later. The researchers at the University of Kentucky worked with some academic institutions to examine these adults and determine whether they had cardiac dyssynchrony. Dyssynchrony in some regions in the heart of patients were identified by the researchers by using MRI. One suggested treatment for these continued heart problems is the use of a pacemaker, although this will need more research to support it.

Babies who suffer from Tetralogy of Fallot can develop this condition as a result of their pregnant mother taking Depakote. If this has happened to your loved one, a lawyer may possibly work for you to get the funds you need for treatment from negligent drug manufacturers.
