Cleft defects linked to smoking during early pregnancy

A new analysis showed that orofacial defects in babies like cleft lip and palate can be caused by women who smoked during the early stage of their pregnancy, an article by HNGN stated on July 14.

According to the analysis of the Surgeon General, more than 400 babies are born every year with cleft defects, and 6 percent of those were born to mothers who smoked during their early pregnancy. Aside from the facial defects, the researchers also noted other birth problems are linked to cigarette smoking by women during pregnancy. Pregnant women were urged by the Surgeon General to avoid smoking and inhaling second-hand smoke.

Another action that is linked to the development of cleft defects in babies is the ingestion of Depakote during pregnancy. If taking this drug has caused negative side effects in  your baby, the attorneys at Williams Hart may help you pursue the drug manufacturer for funds to cover the expensive medical treatment your child will need.
