Washington health experts puzzled by increasing anencephaly cases

Health experts in Washington wanted to find out the cause of increasing cases of anencephaly in babies in certain counties, komonews.com reported on May 14.

In a public hearing held in Sunnydale on May 13, health experts studied the factors that may have caused the anencephaly increase. Shown in the data collected by the Washington Department of Health, at least 23 newborn and unborn babies died from the birth defect in the past five years–much higher than the national average. When this condition occurs as the fetus develops in the womb, abnormal spinal nerve development causes them to grow on the external part of the neck. Although a conclusion has not been reached, health officials formed a committee that will continue to monitor the situation.

Use of mental illness drug Depakote by pregnant mothers unfortunately can cause anencephaly and other birth defects in babies. If you or a loved one experienced this, a lawyer may possibly represent you to get your much needed funds for treatment.
