Psychiatric drugs found effective in reducing violent crimes

Researchers in Sweden suggested that people with mental illnesses who are continuously undergoing medications were less likely to become violent, the Wall Street Journal reported on May 8.

In this study, where 80,000 participants with mental illnesses were tracked from 2006 to 2009, researchers found that violent crimes decreased by 45 percent during the times when people were taking psychiatric medication compared to when they weren’t. Reports said that there were earlier studies that showed people with mental problems were more likely to become violent when they are not medicating. Despite the strong link connecting medication with a reduction in violence in those with mental disorders or illnesses, lead author Dr. Seena Fazel stressed the importance of continuing to weigh the benefits and risks of undergoing treatment. Many of these prescription drugs may have harmful side effects.

Unfortunately other drugs that treat mental illness like Depakote can cause birth defects to babies whose mothers ingest it during pregnancy. If you think you or a loved one has experienced this, a lawyer may be able to represent you against negligent drug makers.
