Depakote may decrease the risk of head and neck cancers

Researchers at the Atlanta Veterans Affairs Medical Center found that Depakote may be used to lessen the chance of a person developing cancer in the head and neck, Science World Report stated on March 24.

Doctor Johann Christoph Brandes and his team studied 440,000 veterans in the U.S., which included 27,000 patients medicating with valproic acid (VPA). They found that those who were taking the drug for at least a year had a 34 percent decreased chance of developing neck and head cancers compared to those people who are not taking VPA. The anti-seizure drug was found to suppress agents that nourish cancer cells. Dr. Brandes is optimistic that VPA may be used by other doctors as another option to treat cancers that can be found in the mouth and larynx.

Sadly, despite these benefits of Depakote, it can cause serious birth defects when pregnant women use it. If your child was born with a birth defect due to the use of this drug, our attorneys at Williams Hart may be able to help you hold its manufacturer liable and get the financial compensation you need.
