Birth defects linked to Valproic acid exposure

A study published in the New England Journal of Medicine confirmed the heightened risk of a fetus of developing birth defects if exposed to valproic acid during the first trimester.

The use of valproic acid or the anticonvulsant drug Depakote by pregnant women can increase the risk of a baby having a cleft lip, cleft palate, craniosynostosis, atrial septal defect, and other birth defects. University of Groningen researcher Lolkje T.W. de Jong-van den Berg, PhD, found a significant increase in congenital malformations in babies exposed to valproic acid after combining data from several group studies. Dr. de Jong-van den Berg said that fetuses that were exposed to valproic acid have a 12 to 16 greater chance of having spina bifida, and the risk of fetuses having other birth defects is 2 to 7 times greater.

Unfortunately, valproic acid is the main ingredient of the anti seizure drug Depakote, which is known to cause babies birth defects. If you think your child has developed birth defects due to Depakote use, a lawyer from Williams Kherkher may be able to help you get the financial aid you need deal with the repercussions.
