Depakote and Blue Baby Syndrome

Tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) is a congenital heart defect that causes the heart to pump oxygen-deprived blood throughout the body. A cause for TOF has been linked to mothers who took the medication Depakote during pregnancy. Depakote is prescribed to treat epilepsy, mood disorders, and severe headaches.

Colloquially, TOF is referred to as “blue baby syndrome” because of the bluish tint that the skin turns. Oxygen deprivation and poor circulation commonly cause this shift in skin tone.

During feeding, babies with TOF may experience difficulty breathing. Excessive crying can cause additional problems for babies with TOF. Older children tire easily from physical activity compared to children without TOF.

If Depakote has caused congenital defects to your child in the Houston area, contact Williams Hart at 800-761-3187 to learn of your legal options. You could be eligible to pursue legal compensation for complications caused by the medication.
