Aortic valve stenosis surgery through valve replacement

When treating aortic valve stenosis, a serious heart condition, there are several options a person can consider. One of these options is to have the aortic valve of a patient replaced.

In this treatment process, a surgeon will cut the narrowed aortic valve and put a substitute valve in, which can be either a tissue valve or a mechanical valve. The patients’ doctor will discuss the pros and cons of the types of valve replacement with a patient prior to performing the surgery.

The mechanical valves are expected to last longer. However, patients who have mechanical valves will have to consistently take anticoagulant medicines due to a high risk of blood clots that build around the metal valve. Tissue valves, on the other hand, may come from a patients’ pulmonary valve, animals, or as a donation from someone who is recently deceased.

Replacing the valve will prolong a patient’s life by 68 to 89 percent.

Although commonly a problem among older adults, aortic stenosis is a birth defect associated with the use of Depakote, causing many newborns to suffer from this serious problem. If your child has this or other health problems as a result of Depakote, call a lawyer from Williams Kherkher at  800-761-3187 to discuss options for filing a lawsuit.
