The classifications of spina bifida

Spina bifida, which is the birth defect where the spinal cord, brain, or the meninges are under developed, does not come in one simple form. In fact, this birth defect has several different classifications.

The mildest form of spina bifida, which can go unnoticed, is called “occulta” and has no visible sign of protrusion in the spinal cord; only some hairs or a dimple may be seen on the lesion. On the other hand, if a baby has meningocele, in which the spinal cord protrudes through the opening in the spinal column and a more serious form of the defect, the baby could face serious complications. And, of all the types of spina bifida that a child could have, myelomeningocele, the condition in which the spinal cord is exposed through an spine opening and may cause paralysis, is considered the most severe.

Unfortunately, spina bifida has been linked to the use of the drug Depakote by mothers during their pregnancy. If your child was born with this birth defect and you believe it was due to Depakote, call 800-761-3187 today. An attorney from Williams Kherkher may be able to help you fight for compensation.
