FDA releases new warning about the use of Depakote and related drugs

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently warned medical practitioners and patients that pregnant mothers taking anti-seizure drugs that contain Valproate can cause a decreased IQ in newborns.

In a statement released by the FDA on May 6, Depakote and other generic drugs that contain Valproate should not be taken by pregnant women. This evidence of lowered IQs was made known by a recently published Neurodevelopmental Effects of Antiepileptic Drug (NEAD) study. As a result, according to the FDA, pregnant women treating bipolar disorder and seizures should seek advice from their health care professionals about medications.

Unfortunately, many babies have sustained serious birth defects, like a decreased IQ, due to their mothers using Depakote during pregnancy. If you or a loved one has been affected by such defects, the legal team at Williams Kherkher may be able to help you fight for compensation. Discuss your situation by calling 800-761-3187 today.
