Spina bifida sufferers may be helped with pre-natal surgery

According to the Center of Disease Control, nearly 1,500 babies are born with Spina bifida each year and although there are some possible prevention methods, the cause of this condition is not known. Recently, researchers have been studying a pre-natal surgery that may be able to help babies that suffer from this life-long condition.

According to s story on Kens5 online, taking a folic acid before and during pregnancy has been shown to reduce the chances that the child will be born with spina bifida. A new pre-natal surgery, that works by the doctor cutting the uterus open, operating on the fetus through the space, then closing the fetus’ spine and sealing the area shut again so that no fluid is released.

Doctors hope by doing this, the child will be able to gain neurological functioning. Children born with spina bifida can have their spine enclosed immediately after birth, but damage may already be done.
