Using the clock to treat seizures in epilepsy patients

A pediatric neurologist is using a new technique in order to help children who suffer from seizures that can not be helped by medication or surgery. Nearly a third of all people that suffer from epilepsy have a form that is untreatable by medication and this doctor hopes to find a solution on how they can be treated.

Epilepsy is a disorder that affects 1 percent of the U.S. population and occurs when a surge of electricity runs through the brain and causes the person to seize. The pediatric neurologist, Tobias Loddenkemper, is hoping that he found a way to help children who suffer from this by adjusting the medication dosage in order to help control the seizures at the time they are worse.

He asks patients to write down the time each day that seizures occur and after noticing that most patients suffer them at the same time each day, he adjusted the dosage that they were taking at the that time in order to have a higher dose when the seizure were to occur. Although this is a new method, it is slowly growing and being researched in order to determine its effectiveness.

Depakote, an anti-seizure medication, is prescribed to treat epilepsy along with other disorders such as Bipolar. Recently, it has been linked to the development of birth defects when taken during pregnancy, contact the Depakote lawyers of Williams Hart by calling 800-761-3187 today.
