Mother files lawsuit against Abbott Laboratories after son born with hypospadius

A Chicago mother has claimed that her son’s penile birth defect was caused by the use of Depakote during pregnancy.

According to the lawsuit, the woman claims that Abbott Laboratories failed to disclose to patients who took the medication during pregnancy may face an increased risk of  their child developing birth defects.

Depakote is an anti-seizure medication that is used to treat epilepsy, bipolar disorder and migraines. The woman’s son was born in April 2010, with a birth defect called hypospadius.

This condition occurs when the urethra is developed on an incorrect side of the penis, which makes urinating very difficult. The complaint states that the drug manufacturing company downplayed the risks on the drug’s label instead of warning doctors and potential mothers of the increased birth defect risk.
