Study: Antiepileptic medication use in bipolar disorder patients

A new study has been done on the use of anitepileptic medication in order to treat bipolar disorder to determine whether the use of this medication has increased the risk of suicide in patients.

The study was done on patients with bipolar disorder who were taking one of three medications including, Lamictal, Depakote, and Tegretol. The study showed that patients who used these medications did not have an increased risk of suicide.

Antiepileptic medications are used to treat bipolar disorder as well as seizure disorders and nueropathic pain. In 2009, a warning was issued by the Food and Drug Administration that stated that the use of multiple antiepileptic medications may increase the risk of suicide, but bipolar patients were never looked into specifically. This study looked into 130 patients over a 30 year period.

Depkote has also been tied to the increased risk of birth defects if used during pregnancy. If this has happened to you or a loved one, contact the Depakote birth defect lawyers of Williams Hart by calling 800-761-3187.
