Premature death risk raising for Bipolar disorder and schizophrenia sufferers

New data has shown that the premature death risk of people with Bipolar disorder and schizophrenia is on the rise.

A study done by researchers at Oxford University looked into death records at hospitals from 1999 to 2006 and found that the early death risk for schizphrenics was raised 60 percent by 1999 and this nearly doubled by 2006. For people suffering from bipolar disorder, it was a 30 percent increase by 1999 and nearly 90 percent by 2006.

The authors say, “There is a need for better understanding of the reasons for the persistent and increasing gap in mortality between discharged psychiatric patients and the general population, and for continued action to target risk factors for both natural and unnatural causes of death.” They conclude: “Optimizing the general health of people with schizophrenia warrants urgent attention.”

Recently, the use of Depakote, an antiseizure medication used to treat bipolar disorder, during pregnancy has been linked to the increased risk of serious side effects.
