Study: Migraines may be symptom of depressive mood disorders

A new study shows that migraine headaches may be linked to more serious health concerns. New research that was recently released shows that forty percent of women that reported currently having a migraine, or having one in the past, were later diagnosed with depression.

‚ÄúThis is one of the first large studies to examine the association between migraine and the development of depression over time,” said the lead author in the study, Tobias Kurth M.D. In the study, 36,154 woman were talked to about their history of migraine headaches.

Fourteen years later, the research team discussed this again with the same women. In the group, 6,456 women had migraines during the time and 3,971 women in the study group later developed some type of depressive disorder. Statistical differences between the risk of depression and degree of migraine has not yet been determined.
