Study looks into alternative treatment for bipolar disorder

A study was just done in order to look into deep brain stimulation as a treatment for bipolar disorder. This type of treatment is already used in order to treat general depression, but the new study shows evidence that it may not only help depression when it is happening, but it may prevent it from returning.

A co-author of the study, a professor at the Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta stated that “not only just helps patients who haven’t been able to recover from depression, but it seems to be associated with the absence of relapses. They’re not only getting better, they’re staying better.”

In a deep brain surgical procedure, wires are place in the brain so that the region can be hit with an electric pulse in order to stimulate it.

The wires are controlled by a device that is put into the chest that keeps the wires pulsing by functioning like a pacemaker. This type of surgery has been used in order to treat Parkinson’s Disease. One issue that arises with the treatment method is that it can cost up to $50,000 for the procedure.

Another treatment method for bipolar disorder is the anti-seizure drug, Depakote, but this drug has recently been linked to the increased risk of birth defects when taken during pregnancy. If this has happened to you or a loved one, you need representation on your side that may be able to help you fight for the compensation that you deserve.
