Surgeon travels world teaching club foot treatment

A surgeon from Davenport has been on a mission to teach a noninvasive, inexpensive procedure to correct club foot around the world.

Club foot, one of the most common birth defects in the world, occurs when the feet are turned sideways and they face downward creating multiple difficulties if left untreated.

A retired orthopedic surgeon from Davenport now travels the world to teach a method created by Dr. Ignacio Ponseti to treat the defect without a surgical procedure. The Ponseti Method is a method that uses braces and casts to correct the turned feet. It was taught at Iowa Universities and began to gain ground as an effective treatment for club foot in the 1990s when surgery used to be the only form accepted.

This method is now used in 90 percent of cases. An organization, The Ponseti International Association, now exists so that the method can be taught to countries across the globe.

Recently, a club foot birth defect has been associated with the use of the antisiezure medication, Depakote, while pregnant. If this happened to someone in your family, contact the Depakote club foot lawsuit lawyers of Williams Hart today by calling 800-761-3187.
