New Jersey in lead for screening heart defects

The state of New Jersey is leading in its efforts to screen infants in heart defects while still in the womb.

According to officials, a simple new screening test called, pulse oximetry, is helping to find birth defects of infants at the earliest stage. The screening is now a New Jersey law and works by placing a sensor on the child’s toe in order to get a measure of how much oxygen is in the baby’s blood.

If there are low levels of oxygen in the blood, this shows signs of a congenital heart disease. For many of these heart defects, early detection is life saving.

Recently, the use of certain medications during pregnancy, such as Depakote, has been linked to the increased risk of birth defects. If this has happened to you or someone you love, contact the Depakote ventricular septal defect lawyers of Williams Hart by calling 800-761-3187.
