The Food and Drug Administration has issued an alert on Oct. 3 that stated that woman who suffer from Bipolar disorder and have taken Depakote during their first trimester of pregnancy have a 1 in 20 chance of their child developing a birth defect.

Officials with the FDA have said that women should only use valporate medications during this time in pregnancy if it essential to their health and treatment.

It was also warned that women who are taking the drug and are not planning on getting pregnant may want to use contraception because the birth defect risk is very high. The following birth defects have been associated with the medication, spina bifida, cleft palate, hypospadias and more.
