Yale study discusses depression during pregnancy

Professors from the School of Medicine at Yale University have been studying depression during pregnancy and will now release their findings in the November journal of Epidemiology.

The study followed 778 pregnant women who have struggled with depression and independently decided whether or not they would take antidepressant medication during their pregnancy. The study found that women who stopped taking medication during the term of their pregnancy did not face a higher risk of having a depressive episode than those who continued with the medication.

Many are scared to stop taking medication for fear that they will have an episode, so this study should calm their nerves. Little is still unknown about the affects on antidepressant medication’s affect on fetal development and this concerns many women during child rearing years.
