What causes a cleft lip?

A cleft lip and palate occurs when the roof of the upper lip and mouth do not fuse completely while the child is in the womb.

The severity of the birth defect can vary. It can be a line between the  mouth and nose or a deep groove that connects between the roof of the mouth and nose. In the U.S., one in every 600 children are born with a cleft lip or palate and this defect is usually corrected with surgery.

There is no exact cause to why this defect occurs,  but there are environmental risk factors. These include diabetes, medication, and smoking. Recently, the use of Depakote while pregnant has been linked to the development of these birth defects.

If you or a loved one’s child has suffered from a birth defect after you were prescribed Depakote while pregnant, contact the Depakote cleft lip and palate lawyers of Williams Kherkher by calling 800-761-3187 today.
