Abbott Laboratories has recently been involved with two lawsuits in Illinois over their antiseizure medication, Depakote.
Both lawsuits state that the drug caused children to be born with birth defects after their mothers were prescribed them during the early stages of their pregnancy. Four dozen minors and several other adults are plaintiffs in the case.
The lawsuit states that the drug maker downplayed the risks that are associated with the medication and also concealed the risks from doctors and physicians. Valproic acid, a prime ingredient in Depakote, has been linked to the use of birth defects if used in the first trimester of pregnancy.
