The parents of two young children have filed a lawsuit against Abbott Laboratories claiming that the use of their anti-epileptic drug during pregnancy caused their daughters to suffer from birth defects.
The lawsuit was filed on July 28 by a woman who was prescribed Depakote during both of her pregnancies. The parents claim that they did not know of the risks associated with taking this drug while pregnant when the medicine was prescribed.
The complaint states that researchers discovered that Depakote was riskier than other anti-epileptic medications and that Abbott Laboratories knew of these increased risks and failed to warn doctors and patients. The couple is seeking actual damages at this time.
