Depakote and pregnancy

Depakote is an anti-convulsion medication that is prescribed to control seizures for people who have epilepsy, for the manic phase of bipolar disorder and migraines. Recently, the drug was moved up to a Class D Risk for human fetus if taken during pregnancy.

This means that if the medication is taken during pregnancy, there is a direct link that the baby could be born with a defect. Pregnant women who have taken Depakote are 10 times more likely that their child will suffer a birth defect.

These may include Spina bifida, anencephaly and heart defects. This is why a person must talk to their doctor before taking the medication while pregnant and should really only be used in life threatening situations when no other drug can be used.

If you or a loved one’s child has suffered from a birth defect, contact the Depakote birth defect lawyers of Williams Kherkher by calling 800-761-3187 in order to discuss your case today.
