Chances of birth defects from epilepsy drugs may be dose-dependent

A new study has shown that four of the most commonly prescribed epilepsy medications will increase the chance of birth defects if women take them during pregnancy.

The study also finds that the higher dosage, the greater the risk. The drugs studied include Tegretol, Epitol, Lamictal, Depakote, and phenobarbital.

Although a majority of the woman taking the drug delivered healthy babies, the rate of birth defects was higher in women who took higher dosages. The greatest risk of birth defects was seen with higher dosages of valproic acid ( Depakote) and phenobarbital.
